It is thought that the first house was built between 1629 and 1672. The first mention of the inn as a licensed house was in 1790, when it was called the Fox and Hounds Public House. In 1792 James Charman took over the property. He was still the landlord in 1801 when Admiral Nelson and Lady Hamilton visited the inn, and The Lady Hamilton Room at our hotel commemorates this historic visit.

In 1822 the inn was known as The Hare and Hounds and described as a favourite resort of the bon-vivants. The inn also provided a venue for poets such as Keats, who wrote his famous poem 'Endymion' here on November 28th 1817. It was also here that the most colourful writer Robert Louis Stevenson wrote some of 'The Arabian Nights' and started an important friendship with the writer Meredith. He wrote "I have lived both at the Hawes and Burford in a perpetual flutter". He was captivated by the romance of the site.

The Hare and Hounds became commonly known as the Burford Bridge mainly due to its location. Visitors to the inn began to go beyond even the glittering social circles frequented by the bon-vivants. The young princess who was later to become Queen Victoria stayed at the inn for several days during a journey to Sussex.

 Information Box X
Hello this box should be movable. It has lots of information to force an overflow and hopefully this will generate a scrollbar.
A second paragraph will be necessary to force this to happen as the first paragraph is not long enough on its own.
