The Georgian Hotel (previously known as the Georgian House Hotel) only become an established hotel after the 1920s. Before this it was a private home known as the 'The White House' with the 'Tudor cottage' attached to the side of it. Early owners of the White House include George Frederick Gordon (1770-1852) and his daughter Emma Gordon (1799-1872), auctioneer, medieval and positivist Rayner Storr (1835-1917), and H.W Mozley who lived at the White House until he died in 1919 and who leased 'Tudor Cottage' to Lady Dorothy Neville.

The Georgian Hotel is named for the founder of the US colony of Georgia, Sir James Edward Oglethorpe, who lived just up the street from the house and was MP for Haselmere.

In 1730 Oglethorpe and about twenty of his friends submitted an application to King George II for a charter to establish a new colony between South Carolina and Florida, with the idea of giving worthy British debtors freedom from prison and a chance at a new life in the New World. To give the proposal an added appeal to the King, the new colony would be called 'Georgia'. Oglethorpe himself planned to go to Georgia with the first settlers and supervise the foundation of the colony. So on November 16th 1737, Oglethorpe set sail from Gravesend on the ship 'Anne' with about 120 settlers. They reached the mouth of the Savannah river on February 12th 1733 and Oglethorpe immediately selected a site for the first settlement, which he called Savannah.

The Georgian Hotel commemorates Oglethorpe's achievement in the names of their suites: the Savannah suite and the Augusta Room (named after a second Georgia town Oglethorpe founded in 1735). His portrait stands proudly at the front of the hotel.

Hello this box should be movable. It has lots of information to force an overflow and hopefully this will generate a scrollbar.
A second paragraph will be necessary to force this to happen as the first paragraph is not long enough on its own.
